Pediatric Eye Exams Huntsville, AL

Pediatric Eye Exams (ages 6 and up)

Here at Luminous Eye Care, we are proud to offer pediatric eye examinations. Children should have their first eye exam around the age of six months. If the first exam finds that their eyes are healthy, they won’t need another appointment until they are between the age of two and three.

Although many schools offer annual eye exams, they are not complete visual exams and the results can be inaccurate. For this reason, you should schedule yearly or bi-yearly examinations to ensure that your child’s eyes are healthy and that he or she can see clearly.

Contact Lens Fittings

Here at Luminous Eye Care, we are pleased to offer many types of contact lenses. We are also dedicated to ensuring they fit correctly.

When choosing contacts, we will go over your options to decide the best type of lenses for your eyes, especially if you have any conditions that don’t make you a good candidate for regular contact lenses.

Regular contact lenses are the easiest to fit. During your pre-fitting exam, we will take many measurements to determine the size you need. It is important that the contact lens covers the entire cornea.

Toric contact lenses are soft lenses used for people who suffer from any form of astigmatism. Fitting them is not much different than fitting regular contact lenses. It just requires a few measurements at a pre-fitting examination.

Monovision lenses are not for most people, especially those who need to have perfect vision all of the time. Drivers and other people who rely on their vision are not good candidates for monovision contact lenses. Even with the correct prescription and fit, they take some adjusting before you can see clearly.

Multifocal soft contact lenses are used to correct presbyopia, so it is really important to us that we understand your needs, lifestyle, and expectations so we can determine the right fit for you. They should fit comfortably right away if we do our job correctly, though these are often the hardest contacts to fit.

It is very important for your comfort to have the correct fit when wearing contact lenses. We are dedicated to measuring your eye correctly so that you can have the correct fit right away. We always try to send home a trial pair to ensure the correct prescription and fit before ordering more contact lenses.

If you want contacts or have any questions about getting them fit properly, don’t hesitate to contact us today at (256) 534-8574.

Stye Treatment

Here at Luminous Eye Care, we are proud to offer stye treatment for our patients.

A stye is caused by a blocked gland. A bump (called a stye) is formed. There are two different types, which are treated differently so it is important to be seen by an eye doctor so you know that they will treat your stye the right way!

Styes can be accompanied by redness and pain in the same area. Some people complain that their eye is irritated and scratchy. If left untreated, you may develop swelling and discomfort. Some people complain that their eye is always watering while others complain of a sensitivity to light.

The first treatment for styes are applying a warm compress to your eye. This will help to soften the material in the gland so that it can drain. Picking the stye will cause scarring so it is not recommended. We sometimes inject a steroid into the lesion to help it heal quicker. We have had to open and drain some styes to help them heal. Sometimes oral antibiotics are necessary due to an infection.

Treatment of the cause of the stye is important so that it does not come right back! We will work with you to get rid of the cause of your stye so you don’t have to worry about another one!

If you have any questions about styes or their treatment, feel free to contact us today at (256) 534-8574.

DMV Eye Exams

Here at Luminous Eye Care, we truly believe in routine eye examinations.

Routine eye examinations are important for several reasons. First of all, we want to do a thorough examination to ensure your eyes are healthy. We also want to look for any problems to catch them before you even have any symptoms.

Some conditions we often detect are glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy. The sooner we discover these problems, the easier treating them will be. Early detection also gives us the best chance of slowing or reversing any symptoms, including vision loss.

During an examination, especially if it is your first visit, we go over your history. We also discuss your daily life and any problems you may be having. It is important to let us know all of the medications you are on before we start the examination.

Then one of our doctors/our doctor will perform a thorough examination of your eyes, eyelids, and inner eyes, using magnification and light. If needed, we may also test your eye pressure to help identify glaucoma.

Children usually get their eyes and vision checked during routine visits with their pediatrician. However, as adults, we have to make time and remember to get our eyes checked regularly. It is really important to schedule routine examinations if you have a family history of eye problems or have higher risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, certain work conditions or medications.

We recommend checking your eyes every two years, though if you have any eye or vision issues, you should be seen yearly or bi-yearly.
